the lively centre of the Schnalstal Valley.
Founded as Kartause Allerengelberg, monastry of the Karthauser monks, Karthaus is the central village in the Schnalstal Valley today. It serves as the place of administration of the Schnalstal Community.
In 1924 a disasterous fire destroyed Karthaus almost completely. In recent years the National Monuments Office restorted what was left of the former monastry.
The village square has not lost its importance over the years. Enclosed by a combination of modern and historic architecture, it remains a central meeting place where young and old embrace traditions.
Well established South Tyrolean artists exhibit their work in the Kartauser cloister each summer. The excellent standard of the exhibition has made it famous beyond the region.
