“Our Glacial Perspectives ”, 2020

A permanent, public artwork by Olafur Eliasson on Mount Grawand

On October 9, 2020, Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson unveiled his installation on the Grawand ridge of the Schnalstal Valley glacier. This thought-provoking artwork encourages visitors to deeply contemplate the impact of climate change on our planet.

The Journey to the Artwork

• Your experience begins with a scenic ascent, leading to a 410-meter path along the glacial ridge.
• This pathway is divided by nine gates, each representing a different period of Earth's ice ages, allowing visitors to walk through the deep-time history of our planet.
• The breathtaking mountain views enhance the sense of scale and geological transformation.

The Pavilion – A Portal to Time and Space

• At the end of the path stands a circular steel and glass pavilion, extending over the mountain’s edge.
• Designed as an astronomical instrument it features concentric rings that track the movement of the sun:
• The top ring aligns with the summer solstice,
• The middle ring with the equinox,
• The bottom ring with the winter solstice.
• By observing the 700+ blue-tinted glass panes, guests can track time by aligning their gaze with the sun’s path, mirroring ancient ways of measuring time through celestial movements.
• The glass colors reference the cyanometer, an 18th-century tool for measuring sky blueness, symbolizing the atmosphere's relationship with light and climate.
